As the warm weather heralds a host of festivals and cultural events to look forward to, Sydney has once again been recognised as a world’s best festival and event city.
Sydney was awarded the honour for the fifth year running by the International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA) at the IFEA’s 59th Annual Convention and Expo in Kansas City.
“This award is a source of great pride for Sydney and demonstrates the Harbour City’s position as one of the world’s leading destinations for tourism and events,” said Destination NSW CEO Sandra Chipchase.
35.2 million people visited Sydney in the year ending June 2014, according to Ms. Chipchase.
“Securing major events has been a priority for Destination NSW, the Government’s tourism and major events agency, as we work towards achieving our goal of doubling overnight visitor expenditure by 2020.”
Events secured by Destination NSW have included the State of Origin and the National Rugby League Grand Final Week and a ten year deal for The Bledisloe Cup which ensures at least one game will be played in Sydney each year from 2012-2021.
Destination NSW is also responsible for the management of Vivid Sydney, which lights up the city in May.
