Lunch recently caught up with Dan Bisa, Managing Director of Bisa Hotels Pty Ltd and the owner of East Hotel in Canberra.
After originally working for Macquarie Bank in Sydney, Dan decided to take somewhat of a sea change and move back to Canberra and into the family business.
He now works in property development and is especially passionate about hotels.
East Hotel is Dan’s newest project which aims to focus on design and lifestyle.
The 4.5 star hotel and apartments boasts an ideal location in the inner south of Canberra and is currently rated number 1 by TripAdvisor for hotels located in the ACT.
Why did you decide to move away from the finance industry and into the family business?
A great project came up, and my then new lovely wife was sick of me trading 24 hours a day and being very stressed!
What do you believe is East’s point of difference?
It is the only lifestyle hotel that delivers the goods in Canberra. Lifestyle hotels should have a strong focus on key elements, ours are space, edgy design that begs an opinion, and the best service for things that matter.
Why should guests choose to stay at East over other hotels?
Location, location, location! We are smack bang in between Kingston and Manuka which are Canberra’s cosmopolitan villages. There are great restaurants, bars and shops in both and they are literally 200 metres from our door and offer our guests so many options. The East is also only a couple of kilometres away from the parliamentary triangle so handy if your are in Canberra for work or to visit our many galleries and museums. Couple that with a spin on our cruiser bikes and canberra is on your doorstep!
What sort of service does East aim to provide?
As mentioned, we are resolutely 4.5 stars, you will not be able to get 24-hour room service here, but what you do get is fantastic service for all things that matter, and thoughtful touches like our deli that serves all the goodies you would need to have an in room picnic or on your balcony, utilising every room’s extensively kitted out kitchenettes.
Can you tell Lunch a bit about the hotel’s restaurant, the Ox Eatery?
Ox Eatery serves simple food done fantastically well. When you walk in the lobby after 5pm there are these amazing wafts of rotisserie chicken and pork – you cant help but drool. their bar stocks over 80 whiskeys, and the outdoor terrace has already become a Canberra institution.
Do you feature any artist’s work in the hotel?
East works very hard to bring upcoming artists into the limelight. For example, tonight we are opening an exhibition by Simon Wilde in the Lobby. He is exhibition over 20 works. We aim to have a new exhibition in the lobby every 2-3 months. We also have a great relationship with Redbubble. A
dozen of their upcoming artists from around the world have their prints hanging in all of our rooms. Really fantastic stuff
If you had a weekend in Canberra how would you spend it?
Obviously there are great galleries etc, but I would bring my bike and hit Stromlo outdoor parks trails, or one of the many great bike tracks around the lake. Canberra also has an excellent wine region. After the ride I’d head out to Clonakilla and other wineries in the region and relax into the afternoon with a red!
