Le Pain Amsterdam

Spuistraat 266 hs Amsterdam , 1012 VW

While the European Union as an idea doesn’t quite unite the people of Europe, one daily ritual does… the enjoyment of bread. For most Europeans bread is everything, a daily fixture and Le Pain Quotidien (French for the daily bread) has become an essential for many.

Here in Spuistraat Amsterdam it certainly appears to be.

Le Pain Quotidien Amsterdam is a cafe that oozes minimalist sophistication and class.

This place feels like you stepped into a coffee table book of architecture and style. Beautifully designed and created the place bustles with locals eating and sharing, looking at each other with knowing smiles as they chow down the days stunning breakfast and brunch creations.

For Le Pain Quotidien creator, chef and food writer Alain Coumont his aim was simple, to “have a place where I can feel home… away from home”.

To the credit of the Amsterdam team, they succeed in bringing this aim home as the  bread, the breakfast, the sharing is everything.

The food is plentiful, appealing to the eye and super tasty. The omelettes are a pure work of art. Try one served with organic sourdough wheat bread and organic baguette with Dutch ham, old farmer’s cheese and spring onion. Or perhaps with smoked Atlantic Kvarøy salmon and spring onion.

The French toast made from organic sourdough with strawberries and organic agave syrup and bacon is a breakfast you dream about.

And the breakfast bowl with quinoa tabouleh, two organic baked eggs, avocado mash, cherry tomatoes, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, mesclun, parsley and lemon, and served with organic cannabis bread is just phenomenal. Phenomenal.

As a young chef dissatisfied with the quality of bread available in Brussels, Coumont started making his own organic sourdough bread. Oddly for something of such quality, Le Pain Quotidien has gone global and now has more than 210 franchised bakeries in 21 countries.

The method is simple delicious, authentic organic and local cuisine, made in-house.

The Amsterdam restaurant many say to be his best. Located in the historic heart of Amsterdam, within walking distance of the Paleis op de Dam, the beurs van Berlage and the Westertoren. Tourists and locals alike mingle at the communal tables sharing stories and bread, breakfast and coffee.

The simplicity of it all is what makes it so special.
